Why Organic?
Organic cotton. Wondering what all the fuss is about? Here are some of the key reasons it’s worth choosing organic cotton every time.
- The environment. Cotton is one of the most chemically dependent crops in the world. In fact it’s estimated that cotton crops, while only taking up 2.5% of land, account for up to 25% of the world’s insecticide use. These chemicals not only make cotton products potentially harmful, when crops are watered the run off pollutes local water supplies.
- Our skin. The amount of chemicals and pesticides that go into producing standard cotton means skin contact with chemicals is almost unavoidable. Babies in particular are more vulnerable to toxic agents, making organic cotton a safer and healthier choice for the whole family. On top of that, organic cotton is considered not only softer but also longer lasting than its standard counterpart.
- Unsafe labour conditions. Non-organic cotton means cotton grown with the use of harsh pesticides. Workers in the fields often handpick the cotton and through the process are exposed to breathing in or otherwise ingesting toxic chemicals. So long as the demand for cheap, poor quality cotton continues so too will unsafe labour conditions for cotton pickers.
Voting with our dollars
Conscious awareness about where our shopping dollars go is one simple but effective way of saying no to industries that disregard people and the planet. Organic cotton supports sustainable farming practices and trade that is respectful to the health and well being of those who produce it, as well as the planet.
And one final reason for making the organic switch is the wonderful feeling that comes from making sustainable, life-affirming choices that positively connect us with our world and all those we share it with.
